On Repeat: Spotify’s Ad Types


Spotify listeners engage with the platform in a variety of ways—tuning into podcasts during a commute, streaming music through headphones at the gym, or staying focused with playlists while working on a desktop. No matter the context, Spotify offers ad formats tailored to effectively reach users wherever and however they’re listening.


  1. Audio Ads

    • What it is: Audio clips that play between songs on the free tier of Spotify.

    • Creatives Needed

      • 15 or 30 second radio spot

      • 1x1 Graphic (640x640 minimum) or 9x16 Short Looping Video (3-8 seconds)

  2. Video Ads

    • What it is: Videos with sound that play when users are actively looking at the app. There are two different formats in which video ads appear: (1) full-screen videos on mobile/desktop during ad breaks or (2) users can watch a video ad in exchange for 30 minutes of ad-free listening.

    • Creatives Needed:

      • 15 or 30 Second Video Spot with audio voiceover

        • Horizontal or vertical video

      • 1x1 Graphic (640x640 minimum)


    Fabulous Fox in St. Louis ran video ads for Broadway's Shucked and drove 174 conversions. This is an example of the full-screen video placement.

Release Radar: Display Ads


Spotify’s newest ad format, display ads, offers a way to connect with users without interrupting their listening experience. These ads appear while users browse the home screen or can replace the album cover art when the app is in-view during playback. When the ad replaces the album cover art, it remains visible until the user closes it or the song finishes playing.


What it is: Banner ads shown on Spotify’s desktop and mobile interfaces, either in-feed or as the album cover art of a song.

Cal Berkeley | For the 2025 Football Season, Cal launched Spotify audio ads to promote their season tickets. They hit users on Spotify who had an interest in American Football and College Sports, driving 16 conversions. 


The Classic Center | The Classic Center in Athens, Georgia utilized Spotify to promote their upcoming engagement of the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen. Alongside their audio ad, they used a 9x16 looping video (called Canvas) to speak directly to their city. This campaign drove 44 conversions. 


Providence College | To promote an anticipated Women’s Basketball matchup, Providence College launched Spotify audio ads to reach their fans. While their 15 second audio spot ran, they showcased a 1x1 Graphic with the match details. This campaign brought in 68 conversions for the Women’s Basketball matchup. 


Air Force | In the greater Denver area, Air Force ran Spotify audio ads throughout their Men’s Basketball season. While hitting a sports interest to a 25+ age audience, they successfully drove 26 conversions.
