How Michigan State Turns Milestone Moments into Donor Engagement

For Michigan State Athletics, the most valuable thing a milestone fundraising campaign produces is not always the dollar total. It is the fact that the conversation kept going. Spartan Fund's annual giving team treats every record, rivalry win, and program milestone as a reason to connect with donors.
That relational posture matters now more than ever. Revenue in college athletics has shifted, and Michigan State has moved from a restricted, sport-specific giving model to a flexible, unrestricted approach. The change requires the department to engage donors more often, not just at the renewal ask, in order to communicate the value of flexibility while continuing to honor the programs their supporters care deeply about.
"Our shift to a flexible giving model requires a fundraising platform that can keep pace. With Paciolan Fundraising, we reduced friction and created meaningful opportunities to engage new, existing, and lapsed supporters." Matt Read, Director of Annual Giving/Athletics, Michigan State University.
Michigan State operationalizes this through milestone campaigns built on PAC Live with custom URLs and predetermined gift amounts. These campaigns are primarily for the purpose of celebrating with fans and supporters. It’s an authentic engagement strategy that isn’t only about raising money, rather it’s about keeping the conversation going.

This playbook applied when men's basketball coach Tom Izzo achieved his 750th career win. The giving page celebrating this milestone auto-populated amounts, so the path from email to completed gift was nearly frictionless. There were three suggested amounts, themed to the milestone: $75 entered donors to win a commemorative ticket, $750 guaranteed one, and $7,500 included an Izzo-signed ticket plus a chance to attend a team practice or score a private suite experience.
In about a week, the Izzo 750 campaign produced:
14,000 fans reached, 4,300 email opens, 134 clicks
$26,700 raised from 24 unique donors
12 accounts upgraded by at least one giving level
8 major gift prospects identified, two of which have since converted into commitments totaling $105,000
4 lapsed donor accounts reactivated
1 donor in a $300k multi-year commitment gave at the $7,500 level for a chance at having a unique experience

The metrics are modest. The conversation is not. Roughly 4,300 supporters opened the email and saw a positive story about a historic career. The reactivations, upgrades, and major gift conversions are where the long-term return shows up. None of that happens without staying in the conversation in the first place. And the touches compound. Those fans are warmer the next time Spartan Fund lands in their inbox, whether or not they gave that day.
"While short-term revenue is nice, what we've really learned is that these campaigns give us the opportunity to re-engage lapsed donors, reach our fan base, and celebrate with those who celebrate Michigan State." Victoria Diaz, Assistant Director, Annual Giving & Operations, Michigan State University.
Two habits make this repeatable. Spartan Fund builds the emails and the PAC Live campaign pages before the milestone arrives, so they launch, rather than scramble, when the moment hits. And a development assistant works the daily payment report every morning, routing prospects to the major gifts team and personally thanking smaller gifts. The thank-you call is itself an appreciated relational touch.
Spartan Fund's discipline is showing up between the asks. Each milestone is a reason to talk to fans and each touch makes the next ask land softer. Stay in the conversation and the relationships compound. Naturally, the support follows.
